Since its construction in 1998, the Angel of the North by Anthony Gormley has become one of the iconic symbols of the North East of England. The Statue is 20 metres high and a span of 54 metres. Constructed from 200 tonnes of steel, it is situated on the site of closed down mine, which previously provided much of the employment of the area.
